The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3 December, aims to promote an understanding of disability issues, the rights of persons with disabilities and gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of the political, social, economic and cultural life of their communities. The Day provides an opportunity to mobilize action to achieve the goal of full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by persons with disabilities, established by the World Program of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1982.

Saaya Association has organized series of seminars on the 3rd December International Day of Disabled Persons in Preston University & girls collage G-10/4 Islamabad. The main purpose of these seminars to create maximum awareness among the students about the Disability issues

Ms. Ayesha Rehman Secretary General of Saaya Association shared her experience. She said that women with disability are facing lot of problems and discrimination from the society. She also said that students and persons with disabilities can work together for the change in the society.

Mr. Azkream information secretary of Saaya Association , He explained that disability is nothing only a society made a person disable he also shared his personal experiences he told when he was in special institution, He did not know how can he walk on the road with white cane, How can he bought his ticket for travel. He talked with his parents that he wanted to study with non-disable children. He did it and started studies with non-disable children, after that his life changed and he gains more confidence however he faced much difficulty in movement. He thought that there is no need to change himself, only the system would be changed

He introduced Saaya Association, also told the history of it, he said it is the name of the movement and courage, a name of thought, where persons with disabilities can finds the solutions of their problems, we believe in working and then making progress. We want to get education, not only special education also in other institutions because we are the part of this society. Mobility is the basic problem of disabled, they are kept their homes unwillingly and even they expired. If any person is user of wheelchair and he doesn’t have wheel chair, so ever he can’t get education, job and also can’t involve him in social activities and creativity. He further explained that if we built only a wall and not constructed the stairs then non-disable people also faced difficulty in movement because they can not climb on it. There fore, it is necessary that the system must be change according the need of Disabled persons. Then the disabled persons could be continued their routine work any difficulty and in happy mood.

Quetta Activity

03 December 2009
International Day Of Persons With Disabilities

Due to the bad situation of law n order in Quetta city we didn’t took risk of rally or walk. we did an awareness program at PBC FM101 Quetta on 3rdDEC.In that program we had address general public as well as call upon Government the issues regarding Persons with Disabilities. Response of listeners was  tremendous. A brief summary of the program is mention below:
Young PWDs of Balochistan are Bestowed by God with every talent and skill necessary to live a successful life and the Government of Pakistan is also providing them with the "so called"opportunities thats why still they are unable to avail these opportunities specially the PWDs of rural areas are facing the worst scenario(as compare to Karachi Lahore Islamabad our city Quetta is also include in rural area of Pakistan regarding this issue). The need of the hour was to provide the disabled persons of Balochistan with the platform from which they can initiate a movement to earn their status equal to all the PWDs of rest of the country.
There are so many organizations in Balochistan working for disabled persons but disability is not a focus point in their agendas and all NGOs are managed by the non disabled persons, as we say only the shoe wearer knows where it hurts so they can not understand the soul of the disability issues.
We are going to initiate information campaigns and public education programmes concerning disability issues, conveying the message that persons with disabilities have the equal rights and obligations as others. Persons with disabilities and their families should be involved in the making of public information and education programmes.Disabled persons and their organizations should be given by the state and donor agencies, high profiled NGOs,corporate sector, equal access, employment, adequate resources and professional training with regard to public information, so they may express themselves freely through the media and communicate their points of view and experiences to the general public. To achieve the goals mentioned the need of the hour is to provide them with comprehensive training of Independent Living. The immediate causes of this marginalization of PWDs have been public policies. Govt. force disabled people into its failed Institutions rather than funding independent living. In this regard we would like to say shamefully that people with disabilities have served as a source ofprofit, power and status. 50% of the staff in social welfare institutions should be people with disabilities, we are 10% of the total population of the country 2% quota is not enough it should be 5% and ensure the implementation. Health cards should be introduce for  PWDs  to release the burden of poverty on their quality of life.
We are committed with ourselves. We are fighting the idea that disability is intolerable and must be eliminated from Balochistan and rest of the Pakistan.
